Screen in St. Peter's Church, Ugborough

This detail of the rood screen in St. Peter's Church, Ugborough, illustrates four of the twelve figures which decorate the lower panels of the screen. The images are painted, and are thought to date from the time of Elizabeth I. The Rev. S. Baring-Gould identified the figures as the twelve Sibyls (prophetesses from Ancient Greece), though John Stabb, in his 1908 book on "Some Old Devon Churches" thought them more likely to represent figures from the Passion.
