Richard Wraith first came to Devon to board at Kelly College at the age of 13 having spent his early years in Hampshire. Keener at sports than academics, he joined Britannia Royal Naval College as a scholar in 1961. After training at Dartmouth and in the Fleet in the Far East he joined submarines in his father’s footsteps. Serving in 13 submarines, diesel, fast attack and strategic and commanding 3 of them he spent the last 8 years in the Navy as Chief of |Staff in Gibraltar and Plymouth. He was appointed CBE in 1996 and retired shortly afterwards. With his wife Alison he has had homes in Yelverton, Clearbrook and Tavistock. They have three children (psychiatrist, banker and barrister) and 7 grandcildren. He joined the Dartmoor Trust in 2016 and is also a member of the Devonshire Association and the Dartmoor Society.
