Dartmoor Light and Shadow
Exhibiting Work from 25 Contemporary Photographers & Historic Archived ImageryThe exhibition coincides with the first week of Devon Open Studios and also Heritage Open Days, providing a major destination for many art enthusiasts touring the county at that time.
The Manaton area was home to an early practitioner of photography for scientific study, Arthur Roope Hunt (1843-1914). With an artist’s eye he was also one of the first photographers to capture the aesthetic qualities of moorland working people with a camera rather than on canvas. Many of Hunt's photographs are important in showing traditional moorland farming practices now lost.

Phoebe Wortley-Talbot
The exhibition is part of a wider project being run by the Dartmoor Trust in the legacy of Phoebe Wortley- Talbot. Centred around photography and art, this legacy project is bringing together a skilful body of creatives to create a lasting portrait of Dartmoor. The aim of this collaborative project, run by The Dartmoor Trust, is that it will encompass the essence of the moor as interpreted through the eyes of contemporary practitioners. It will serve as a documentation of life on Dartmoor and the artistic processes we use today.
