Cairns on Butterdon Hill

Cairns on Butterdon Hill

This image was taken in August 1945. The cairns shown are piles of stones, raised as a landmark or a memorial and are quite noticeable on Butterdon Hill. In prehistoric times a cairn was usually erected over a burial site. These probably date from the Bronze Age.
