The rocks on Bellever Tor

This tor is sometimes referred to as Bellaford Tor, and was probably named after the farm that existed here. There are many archaeological remains on and around this tor, including old settlements and stone rows, although some have been obscured or destroyed by the conifer plantations of the twentieth century. These plantations were a consequence of the concern over a shortage of soft wood for manufacturing purposes. Also during the 1900s, Bellever Tor was used for celebrating the end of the hunting season. This took place in May and was known as "Bellever Day". This photograph was taken in the month following this festival (06/06/1937). "Bellever Day" was a very popular occasion with the people of Dartmoor.
