Fitzford gate Tavistock
Of the ancient mansion house of the Fitz family at Fitzford at the Southern end of the town, nothing is left but the rebuilt gatehouse. The Fitz family settled in Tavistock in the 15th century in an impressive mansion house, an important family of note of lawyers and members of parliament. The house stood for two centuries and was damaged in the Civil war. After 1671 on the death of Mary the last member of the family, it fell into disrepair. Only the gatehouse survived, although this was dismantled in 1869 for public saftey and re-assembled in situ as seen here.
