Gutter Tor

Gutter Tor

This photograph was taken in 1914 of Gutter Tor. Gutter tor is 1,148 ft in height and seen from certain angles the tor represents a huge cleft or cut. Gutter may be a corruption of 'Cut Tor'. Alternatively as water has been leated to Gutter Mires by the tinners and gutter is the term often used on S. Dartmoor for a leat, this may be the origin of the name. There are 3 main piles. There is a large rock basin on Gutter Tor caused by a localised weathering process, induced by trapped water, frost and wind. The basin here has a naturally occuring drainage channel. Below Gutter Tor is Gutter Mires source of Sheepstor Brook.
