Nun's, or Siward's, Cross

Nun's, or Siward's, Cross

Siward's cross is the ancient name for this cross, but it has been more commonly known as Nun's cross for some time - the earliest reference is to Nannecross in 1699. It is the largest and oldest recorded cross on Dartmoor. The 1240 Perambulation of Dartmoor records this cross as a boundary marker. The shaft of the cross was broken when the cross was overturned in 1846. It was repaired two years later, and this repair in which the two pieces are secured together with iron clamps, can be seen in this picture. The photograph was taken in 1913.
