Whitchurch Down Cross
This cross functioned as a waymarker for those travelling across Whitchurch Down towards Tavistock. It is thought that monks would have used this track on their regular journeys to Tavistock Abbey from both Buckfast Abbey and Plympton Priory. It is obvious from this photograph that the cross has been altered in the past. In fact the cross head is the oldest of the two parts and has been placed on top of a more modern shaft which is a different grade of granite and greater in depth than the head. This accounts for the irregular shape of the cross. This photograph was taken on the 02/05/1937.
