Leigham Tunnel, Plymouth and Dartmoor Railway

Built in the 1820s, the tunnel at Leigham was a significant feature of the Act authorising the building of the Plymouth and Dartmoor Railway; railway tunnels were rather an unknown quantity at this time. The tunnel was dug by sinking a central shaft and working outwards. Photograph taken in 1934.
