The Princetown Railway from Princetown to Yelverton opened in 1883, based on the track of the upper section of the earlier Plymouth and Dartmoor Railway, which carried mainly granite from the quarries and was not a financial success. The railway eventually closed in 1956, carrying mainly tourists in its later years.
