Ringmoor Down Tumulus

Ringmoor Down Tumulus

This photograph is of a tumulus or barrow at Ringmoor Down. These ancient burial places generally consist of a mound of earth heaped over a stone core. Disappointingly most of the barrows have already been opened by archaeologists and treasure hunters of previous generations when archaeological methods were not as advanced, so much historic information has been lost. The photographer's daughter, Shirley Taylor, is standing in front of the tumulus. The photograph was taken on 29/04/1940.
