The Widgery Cross

The Widgery Cross

Widgery Cross sits on the summit of Brai Tor. It is made of granite blocks and was erected in 1887 to commemorate Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee. Eric Hemery says in 'High Dartmoor' that the name is Brai Tor, pronounced Bray Tor, and sometimes written Braytor, but Ordnance Survey's Brat Tor is absurd. It gets its name from the person who commissioned it, a local Dartmoor artist of the 19th century - William Widgery. This photograph is dated 25/09/1944
