Princetown prison
This photograph was taken in August 1913 of the prison at Princetown. Princetown came into existence through the building of the prison when the foundation stone was laid in 1806. For a while it was used as a prison housing French prisoners from the Napoleonic wars and Americans, but closed down in 1816 at the end of the war.
It held up to 9,000 prisoners at any one time. It became a factory for the production of peat and eventually became used as a prison again in 1850, for prisoners serving long sentences and it is still used as such today. The prison is made of granite.
