Granite rail junction on the Haytor Granite Railway

The granite tramway shown here served the five quarries in the Haytor area. Granite was quarried from here and taken by the tramway to link with a canal at Teigngrace and then on to the river Teign. Wagons were drawn by teams of horses , with the wheels of the wagons fitting over the flanged granite rails. Haytor granite was used in the construction of many famous buildings in London including London Bridge.
