Sheeps Tor

Taken in August 1913, this photograph from the lane south east of the tor shows Sheeps Tor looming over the surrounding land. Sheeps Tor, also known as Shittistor, stands magnificently at 1,200 feet above sea-level. It is reputedly the home of the pixies. Pisky House is a cave on the tor where villagers would leave small offerings to attract the favour of the pixies. During the Civil War the cave was used as a hiding-place for a member of the royalist Elford family. Apparently he decorated the walls of the cave with frescoes to while away the time - all lost now, alas.
