Piles Hill, disused tramway
Taken in July 1941 looking from Piles Hill to Ugborough Beacon, along the path of the old Redlake China clay tramway. The tramway came into being at the beginning of the 20th century to serve clay workings at Red lake and Leftlake. The clay itself flowed under gravity through earthenware pipes down to the works at Cantrell. The project was finally declared bankrupt in 1932. This is now used as part of the Two Moors way a popular walking route across Exmoor and Dartmoor.
