Ball Gate, Moorside

Ball Gate, Moorside

Taken in June 1942 at Ball Gate, where an enclosed field system gives way to open moorland and where a track passes through that goes on to the Bala Brook. There is a "court" at Ball Gate, being a small enclosure into which ponies were driven by moormen for the purpose of securing them. This one is where the track over Coryndon Ball (Ball being a rounded hill) enters Brent moor, formed by two gates placed across the track, the wall on each side of it between the gates being higher than ususal. Crossing stated this was once called a drift court and it has quite fine Brent manorial gateposts.
