Cairn on Sharp Tor

Cairn on Sharp Tor

Taken in May 1945 of a cairn, being a mound of stones piled up as a memorial, burial chamber or to mark a boundary or path. This is situated just below Sharp Tor and between Sharp and Hare Tor, seen in the distance. Sharp Tor is sometimes referred to as Lydford Sharp. The boundary stone showing WD19, refers to the War Department and is one of 46 similar posts used to mark out the Willsworthy Range. They date from when the Army purchased its first tract of land, virtually following the line of the old Willsworthy Manor in about 1900.
