London and South Western Railway station, Tavistock

London and South Western Railway station, Tavistock

This photograph was taken in April 1968, just 2 months before the line was closed. In 1890 the London and South Western Railway company extended its mainline from Waterloo through Tavistock to Plymouth. The new station was sited off Kilworthy Hill. When this line opened it meant Tavistock was served by 2 stations as it already had the Great Western railway with a station in north road. This railway line was closed by Beeching on 5th June 1968.
