Rail Accident at Six Mile Post

This view shows an accident that occurred some time during 1887, on the mixed gauge lines of the Great Western Railway near Clearbrook. On this stretch of line, the London and South Western Railway had running powers, and ran trains down into Plymouth from the joint station at Lydford. The engine was a LSWR 395 class 0-6-0 locomotive, No. 442, which toppled down a bank pulling a coach with it, after a coupling broke. The engine was recovered and continued working in the Exeter area until 1961.
