Ryder's Hill

Taken in 1941 on the summit of Ryder's Hill at 515 metres the highest point on the southern moor. The name Ryder comes from the name of a south Dartmoor family from the 18th century. Boundary stones were used to deliniate the boundaries of the Forest of Dartmoor and later divisions of parish, manor and monastery. There are 2 boundary stones on Ryders hill as well as an OS (Ordanace survey) triangulation mark. The smaller stone (which is behind the lady) has H incised on it and is known as Petre on the mount. It marks part of the Holne parish perambulation. The other stone has B on it for Buckfastleigh parish and is known as Petres boundstone. The OS triangulation mark was built in 1937 to mark the height.
