Clapper Bridge over the East Dart at Postbridge
Photograph was taken in August 1913 of the clapper bridge over the East Dart at Postbridge. Clapper bridges are numerous on Dartmoor formed from large slabs of granite and appear to be unique to Dartmoor. The bridge is 8 ft 6" high in the centre, 42 ft 8" long and 4ft 9" wide. Fords and stepping stones preceded bridges and the original stepping stones at Postbridge still remain 150 yds above the clapper bridge. It is probably post medieval, not earlier than 1400. The bridge was repaired in 1880 at the instance of the Duchy authorites after one of the central stones had been thrown off in about 1824.
