Powdermills

Powdermills

Photograph dated July 1969. These ruins are at Powder Mills between Postbridge and Two Bridges where gunpowder was manufactured from 1844 to the late 1890s. It shows the massive construction of the walls, built to withstand accidental explosions. The roof structures were light so as to direct any accidental explosions upwards. This is the middle one of three on the hillside and differs from the other two in having no gable ends.
