Rockmoor House, Yelverton

Rockmoor House, Yelverton

The photograph was taken on 21/02/1940. The house had been requisitioned (by Americans?) during World War II and was bought by a family returning to England from Brazil in 1946. It was returned ' in a dreadful condition', with black mould on the ceilings and the gardens completely overgrown. The owner's daughter reports that she 'helped my father clear the front garden and was surprised to find a path to the front door. A large buddleia bush was growing out of a crack in the front doorstep, making it difficult to get into the house' The house was converted into two flats; her family on the ground floor with the first floor rented to a naval family. A small field at the back was used to grow vegetables.
