Lydford gorge
Just south of the centre of Lydford, at the bottom of the hill is the beautiful Lydford gorge through which the River Lyd runs, a river that flows fast and southwards from the hills of Dartmoor. It is a deep and beautiful, tree-lined ravine and is the deepest gorge in south-west England, stretching a distance of about 1.5 miles from the spectacular "Devil's Cauldron" whirlpool at the bridge end to the very fine 30-metres-tall "White Lady Waterfall" at the other end. It is possible to walk through the gorge on paths and walkways although today slightly safer than the plank seen in this picture. The gorge is now managed by the National Trust.
