Hound Tor

Taken in April 1946 of Hound Tor or Great Hound Tor (1,130 ft) with a cairn circle and kistvaen in the foreground. The tor has been described as "a noble mass of rocks. It derives its name from the shape assumed by the blocks on the summit, that have been weathered into forms resembling the heads of dogs". It is an area steeped in folklore including Arthur Conan Doyle's novel "The Hound of the Baskervilles." A kistvaen is a stone burial chamber, usually either enclosed by a stone circle or covered by a cairn or both.
