Staple Tor from Roos Tor
This photograph, taken on 18/05/1940, shows the striking piles of Roos Tor (1,479 feet) in the immediate foreground with Staple Tor on the horizon. The placename staple derives from the word meaning tower, and alludes to the tor's granite formations which are said to resemble the towers of a great gateway. These formations, where granite blocks perch on top of each other, are sometimes referred to as steeples.
