Mica Dam at Shaugh Prior China Clay works
This photograph was taken in 1913 of a Mica dam at Shaugh Prior china clay works. China clay is found extensively on the edges of Dartmoor especially the south west and is still mined commercially today. The mica dam traps and removes flaky mica left from the inital processing of china clay. The finer material was then marketed as second grade clay. The clay workers are sweeping the materials down the channels with a 'shiver' a rake like implement made of wood.
