Ringmoor Kistvaen

Ringmoor Kistvaen

This is a typical example of a Dartmoor kistvaen (cist). The sides and cover-stone are slabs of granite. These would have been covered by a mound of earth forming a barrow. Most of the sites have been excavated and plundered in earlier days so there is no clear remaining evidence for their use. They are thought to have been burial chambers. This photograph was taken in 1913.
