Drake's Drum, Buckland Abbey

This image taken from a brochure about Sir Francis Drake's drum, which is held at the National Trust property of Buckland Abbey. The Cistercian Abbey of Buckland was converted to a private home after the Dissolution by a cousin of Sir Walter Raleigh, and later acquired by Sir Francis Drake. The house contains mementoes of the sea captain, including maps, charts, portraits and his Drum. The Drum is reputed to be the actual drum used on his ships to beat the crew to action prior to engagements, and it was with Sir Francis when he circumnavigated the world and when he died off Panama in 1596. Drake's coat of arms is painted on the side of the drum. A legend surrounds the drum. It is claimed that it can be heard at times when England is in danger from war or when significant national event takes place.
