Gateway to newtake in the Glazebrook valley.
This photograph was taken in June 1941 of a gateway into a newtake in the Glazebrook valley. A newtake was an area of land that the tenants of the Ancient tenements had the right to enclose. This was a right that was strictly limited and not one that justifed the enclosures made in the 18th and 19th centuries. Often the land was quite poor and only suitable for grazing animals.
