Fireplace, Boringdon Hall
This fireplace and coat of arms stands in the main hall at Boringdon Hall, Plympton, 7 miles from Plymouth. Boringdon Hall is a 15th century grade 1 listed building now in use as a hotel. Past visitors have included Sir Walter Raleigh, Sir Francis Drake and Queen Elizabeth I. The name Borringdon comes from the Saxon "Burth-Y-Don" meaning 'enchanted place on the hill'. IThe Hall used to belong to the Priory of St Peter of Plympton until the dissolution of the monasteries in 1539. The manor was remodelled in the late 1500's to traditional Elizabethan design and was completed in 1587.
