Roos Tor from Staple Tor
This photograph, taken on 18/05/1940, shows Staple Tor in the immediate foreground with Roos Tor (1,479 feet) on the horizon. The placename staple derives from the word meaning tower, and alludes to the tor's granite formations which are said to resemble the towers of a great gateway. These formations, where granite blocks perch on top of each other, are sometimes referred to as steeples.
