River Exe
The River Exe near its source on Exmoor, photographed from Blackpitts Gate, a gateway onto the wild expanse of the moorland. This area, north of Simonsbath on the road to Lynton, is steeped in history. Blackpitts itself, with records dating back to the early 20th century, hints at its past through its name, likely a reference to the dark, peaty ground characteristic of the area. One notable feature is a former First World War building, repurposed and transformed into a shepherd's dwelling, a testament to the area's practical use and history. Today, both the bridge and Blackpitts Gate serve as popular access points for walkers eager to explore the rugged beauty of Exmoor National Park, offering trails into the heart of the moor and the beginnings of the River Exe's journey.
