Rebuilding walls at Grimspound on 26 May 1894
This is one of a number of photographs taken by Robert Burnard, which record the work of the Dartmoor Exploration Committee. One of the aims of the Dartmoor Exploration Committee was to excavate, repair and restore archaeological sites on the Moor. In particular, from 1894, Burnard and the Dartmoor Exploration Committee conducted systematic excavations of Dartmoor's hut circles. Here, the Reverend Sabine Baring-Gould watches as labourers, including Mr George French, rebuild a wall at Grimspound on 26th May 1894. Grimspound is a prehistoric enclosure built about 3,500 years ago containing the remains of hut circles.
