Manaton churchyard cross
The granite cross in Manaton churchyard from a post card c1900. An earlier granite cross is said to have been destroyed by the vicar, Rev John C Carwithen, in the 1840s because of the supposedly pagan practices associated with it. The existing cross may be a medieval waymarker from nearby, found supporting a wall in the 1900s (see "A Book of Dartmoor" by S Baring-Gould and "Dartmoor Crosses" by Harry Starkey, but cf assumed date of post card?)
