At Southcott. Transferring hay from a wagon to build a haystack.

The cut hay would have been allowed to dry in the field and then loaded onto the horse drawn wagon (or wain) for transport. The hay was unloaded from the wagon to build the haystack (or rick). The haystack was probably sited near a barn (or similar protected place) where animals would be kept during the winter. The haystack was then gradually dismantled during the winter to provide feed for the animals wintering in the barn.
