The Bowermans Nose

A huge rock, estimated at 40 or 50 feet high, at Hayne Down,near Manaton, facing toward Chagford. Bowerman is said to have lived in the neighbourhood around the time of the Norman Conquest. Another connection is said to have been the John Bowerman who died at North Bovey in 1663 (Hemery, High Dartmoor.) There is also a Bowerman recorded at Dean Prior in 1772. Various other theories have been advanced but also not proved.
