Newspaper cutting, trial of Rev Sanders of Manaton
Newspaper cutting from the Devon & Exeter Gazette, 16 Jan 1920, reporting on the case of the Rev Sanders, Rector of Manaton. Caption reads: "Sir Francis Newbold KC, Chancellor of the Diocese of Exeter, who presided over a Consistory Court yesterday to investigate a charge against the Rev JCB Sanders, Rector of Manaton." Sanders was tried and found guilty of selling an Elizabethan chalice belonging to the parish. Other valuable items from the church also went missing at that time. This ended Sanders' frequently difficult time as Rector, which had begun in 1894.
