RAF Harrowbeer

RAF Harrowbeer

The Defence Unit was responsible for airfield defence and security. The living quarters were on the western perimeter of the airfield. This barrack hut was a Laing Hut. It was constructed of timberboard sections bolted together, with weatherproof felt covered plasterboard on the outside and plasterbaord on the inside. This hut would be a single room with 24 beds, heating provided by a Romesse type stove in the centre (the flat top would heat a kettle!). There was one set of outdoor latrines per three huts. An air raid shelter was adjacent to the huts. Photograph taken August 2001.
