RAF Harrowbeer

RAF Harrowbeer

The Defence Unit was responsible for airfield defence and security. These living quarters were close to the western perimeter of the airfield, near the technical site. This barrack hut was a Laing Hut. It was constructed of timberboard sections bolted together, with weatherproof felt covered plasterboard on the outside and plasterboard on the inside. This hut would be a single room with 24 beds, heating provided by a Romesse type stove in the centre (the flat top would heat a kettle!). There was one set of outdoor latrines per three huts. An air raid shelter was adjacent to the huts. Photograph taken August 2001.
