RAF Harrowbeer
The north eastern loop of the bulk petrol installation. To the right of centre is the bay where the bowser would be filled with aviation fuel from the fuel tanks. The tanks were buried in a concrete walled pit on the island behind the concrete stand to make them blastproof and splinterproof. The fuel tanks at RAF Harrowbeer had a capacity of 48,000 gallons - possibly four 12,000 gallon tanks - giving a minimum six week supply. On the opposite side of the circle, was a similar concrete bay, where fuel tankers could park to top up the tanks. Photograph taken August 2001.
