RAF Harrowbeer
The battle headquarters was an underground office suite for the defence of the airfield from ground attack. It consisted of an observation post, seen in the picture, with a slit for observations, office, telephone exchange, room for runners, in case of loss of telecommunication, and chemical toilet. They were often, as here, sited against hedges for additional camouflage. At Harrowbeer, this structure probably replaced the brick built headquarters, situated between the two Bellman Hangars on the north west side of the site, after overground structures were considered too vulnerable. It is on high ground to the south of the airfield, with commanding views over the whole site. The picture shows the mastic covering used to protect the concrete.
