Prestonbury Castle

Prestonbury Castle

Prestonbury castle above the river Teign and Fingle Bridge at 1100 ft or 350 metres. This picture is taken from the book "The Archaeology Of Dartmoor From The Air". Published 1985 by Devon Books. ISBN: 0 86114 754 5 Excerpt from book on opposing page: This site has a dramatic position overlooking the steep gorge of the river Teign (in shadow in the background of the photograph). The substantial ramparts of the inner enclosure are clearly visible as are V-shaped ramparts forming a second "enclosure" on relatively gently sloping ground to the east. An outer rampart is not visible in this photograph. Little is known of the origin or function of this hillfort, but it only lies 1 km as the crow flies from Cranbrook Castle, both on the south side of the Teign valley an together they form an impressive group of defended sites which must reflect the stability and units of power in later prehistoric times on North-East Dartmoor.
