Avon Dam from Rider's Rings
Avon Dam from Rider's Rings. The dam was built from 1954-1957 and covers 50 acres with water. The idea for a dam was mooted in 1948 but this went to an enquiry before a board was formed in 1949 with ministerial approval given in 1950. Rider's Rings are important and impressive enclosures, one oblong and the other square, sharing a party wall. They are 1150-1250ft long and encloses an area of 6 acres and 30 buildings. Inside the enclosure wall there is evidence of small yards, being stock pens.
