Hackney canal - lock

Hackney canal - lock

This image shows the only lock on the Hackney canal at Newton Abbot showing the railway in the distance. Hackney canal was built in 1843 to transport china clay from the china clay quarries near Kingsteignton. There was just one tide- lock at the entrance to the canal. A wharf, basin and clay cellar were constructed at the terminus.
