Vermin trap

Vermin trap

This vermin trap can be found on the south side of Legis Tor. Legis Tor was the centre of one of Dartmoor's rabbit warrening businesses. It is on the side of the Plym river and there are four other warrens in the area. The warren was probably originally set up in the 14th century shortly after rabbits were introduced to Britain. Burrowing is not easy on granite so pillow mounds were made to house the rabbits. These were long banks of stone covered with soil and turf. There are many of these mounds around Legis Tor. Vermin traps are another feature of the warrens. Weasels or stoats would spring a slate within the trap and thereby become imprisoned to await the warrener's terriers.
