Take off stone near Lydford

Take off stone near Lydford

Take off stone near Lydford. On 18th Century turnpike roads there were rules controlling the number of horses pulling carts to preserve the road surface. Extra horses were permitted on uphill stretches and the take-off stone indicated where the extra horses had to be unharnessed. This is a photograph of the original stone which was later stolen. A replica is now in place.
