Rider's Rings, River Avon
Rider's Rings are important and impressive enclosures, one oblong and the other square, sharing a party wall. They are 1150-1250ft long and encloses an area of 6 acres and 30 buildings. Inside the enclosure wall there is evidence of small yards, being stock pens. The wall is 6-7ft thick, faced on both sides with small blocks and high enough to keep cattle in and predators out, with a palaside on top. In the huts some of which were free standing and some attached to pen walls, there were finds of charcoal, cooking stones, flint chips and fragemnts of pottery. There is a unique 4 ft hearth inside the entrance of a hut with a draught shield of granite leaning inwards and packed with small stones. Normally a hearth would be in the centre. In August 1930 Worth (a writer) worked on this but only for a week so there was not enough time for a detailed study.
